Water voles are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act (1981) (as amended). They live at the edges of ditches, ponds, rivers and streams and numbers have massively declined in recent years. This is mainly due to predation by the introduced American mink, but is also partly due to habitat loss.
If you have waterbodies on your site, particularly streams, rivers and ditches water voles could be present. We can carry out a water vole survey on your land or can advise whether one should be carried out. As water vole surveys can only be carried out when they are most active (usually in the warmer months) advice should be sought at an early stage.
